School Community Council and Home & School

Membership in Home & School
It’s that time of year again to register as a member of the KDSS Home & School Association. We don’t fundraise aggressively and our presence in the hallways is very limited but it’s still a valuable experience. ~We meet the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Library.

Think of it as a Win-Win-Win-Win situation.

Your Child gets:

  • Studies consistently show that kids with involved / engaged parents do better in school than those who don’t!
You get:

  • A monthly invitation to find out what’s happening at KDSS.
Opportunity to ask questions.
  • Have your say and know it has influence.
You can help decide on School Enrichment Initiatives (we have some money to spend).
  • Help deliver those same initiatives.
  • Acquaint yourself with staff for when you might need help.
  • Support the Provincial Association which advocates for all students.
KDSS gets:

  • Another informed voice helping shape policy.
  • Parent-Teacher involvement.
  • A stronger School Community.
H&S gets:

  • Strengthened “seat at the table”.
  • Differing opinions and ideas, a balanced discussion.
  • Capability to make a contribution.
Let Lewis Cavasotto, Heather Padfield (chair), or Randall DeKraker (principal) know if you’re interested.~

It’s $15 for a Family Membership and includes membership at EMPS and HHPS if you wish.~ All $15 goes to the Ontario Federation of Home and School Associations who advocate for all students at the provincial level.

Review of Board Policies
On a regular basis new or revised Bluewater Board policies are posted for us
to provide feedback on.

The ones currently for review can be found here: Draft Board Policies
Right now there is one called  BP 6951-D "Assessment and Evaluation" which
we need to provided feedback on by the beginning of May.
If you have any comments please email them to Heather Padfield

Parent Involvement at High School

Parents with a son or daughter in high school find that there seems to be less opportunity for parent involvement.  Those days of helping out with reading in the classroom, organizing a bike rodeo, working at the book fair or bake sale, helping out at the fun fair, or even fundraising for a Grade 8 grad trip are in the past as are some of the avenues you had for keeping in touch with the school and finding out what is going on.

High school students are more independent and do things like fundraising and extracurricular activities will less involvement from parents. School newsletters are only sent out with the report cards.

So how do you get involved in a different way?

There are two active parent organizations at KDSS, the Home and School and the School Community Council (SCC).  Both of these meet monthly and are attended by at least one of the principal or vice-principal, and often a teacher representative and a student representative.  The parents who attend are updated on school and board policies and plans and have a forum to discuss issues of interest to them.

Over the past few years we have discussed:
a.. Bullying and ways the school is addressing it
b.. Nutrition with a focus on what is offered in the cafeteria and vending machines
c.. Future secondary education in our board including what to do about declining enrollment, how to provide a good education for students who are not interested in pure academics, addressing drop out rates, etc.
d.. Semestering and sharing programs with other schools

All parents are invited to attend the meetings.

Meetings are the second Tuesday of the Month starting at 6:30 in the library.
